Phillips From the album - Wilson Phillips Link to Lyrics of Release Me |
According to Carnie, Wilson
Phillips began in 1986. Their friend Owen Elliot (daughter of the
late Mama Cass Elliot) had contacted Chynna about getting all the
1960's musician's children together to record a song and give the
profits to an anti drug association or an AIDS foundation. They
called around, but no one seemed interested, so they decided to
do it on their own. Carnie and Wendy taught Chynna how to sing
harmony, and soon they wanted to form a group.
They invited Owen to be in it, but she
wanted to go solo. Following the advice of Chynna's mom Michelle,
they went to see a producer named Richard Perry. He liked them
and put them in a studio singing demos. He introduced them to
Glen Ballard, who became their producer, and songwritting
collaborator. Together they wrote and recorded songs until they
had enough to get a record deal. And they did in 1989. They made
the album Wilson Phillips and released it in 1990. It sold
10,000,000 (10 million) copies worldwide. They toured in Japan
and other places and had several songs on the charts. Then it was
time to make a new album. The whole thing was written in three
months. They worked on it every day, jotting down any ideas that
came to them. They called it Shadows and Light. It didn't take
off as well as the first one, but it sold quite a few copies.
They made a total of 8 music videos, which caused some problems
because the record company wanted Carnie to stick to the
background, essentually hiding her. They felt her weight could be
a problem. But they got through it and made some real nice
looking videos. After the second album Chynna decided to start
her own solo career. In 1995 Chynna released her album Naked and
sacred. She also got married to actor William Baldwin. In 1993
Carnie and Wendy released a Christmas album called Hey Santa.
After that they were going to make a solo album, when the record
company dropped them.In 1994 Carnie recorded a song with her dad
for the first time. It was titled Fantasy Is Reality/Bells Of
Madness. In 1995 she started her own talkshow Carnie, which only
lasted 1 season. She got ingaged to her banker boyfriend Steven
Port, made a low-impact workout video, with friend Idrea Lipman,
called Great Changes, and has started her own plus size clothing
line called The Carnie Collection. In 1997 she recorded Our Time
Has Come a duet with James Ingram, for the cartoon movie Cats
Don't Dance. She and Wendy are making a new album called The
Wilsons-Monday Without You, with their father
