Reedsburg Fire Department

The Reedsburg Fire Department was formed in October of 1873 with the purchase of a truck, ladders and miscellaneous items used for fire protection.

In June of 1877, a hand engine was purchased for $350.00. Two years later, the Village Board voted to build its first engine house.

In 1923 the Reedsburg Fire Department purchased a LuVerne Fire Engine Pumper for $5000.00. Today, this same fire engine sits in the station and is affectionately named "Old Betsy".

A Second truck was added in 1947 which is still in the fire departments possession. Both of these trucks are in operable condition.

Many trucks have been added over the years to keep up with the stringent regulations that exist in the fire fighting environment. The City of Reedsburg has one of the better ratings for a volunteer fire department.

The rural fire department was formed in 1926. One hundred sixty farmers each paid $25.00 to subscribe to the rural fire department. In 1946, the rural department was taken over by five townships, to this day the rural department is still in the jurisdiction of the township chairman.

The operation of the Reedsburg Fire Department comes under the supervision of the Fire and Police Commission and is directed by the Fire Chief.

Organized on a volunteer basis, at present there are 38 members on the city fire department and there are 16 on the rural fire department. There are eight trucks serving the city and rural departments as well as foam generating equipment and a rescue unit, complete with hydraulic cutting equipment.

Regular inspections of all commercial and industrial property in Reedsburg are made by the department's fire inspector.
